The Camp Site

This is a site of historical and archaeological importance.

In the middle ages it was the residence of the Master of St Leonard's Hospital, the largest medieval hospital in England.

The residence was an imposing stone house with intricately carved stonework.

In 1999, the site of St Leonard's was excavated on Timeteam Live on Channel 4 TV.

The Georgian Facade

The Pilgrimage of Grace assembled here before its march on London in 1536.

There are rich archaeological remains on the six acre moated site.

It is thought that the last stand of the Royalist Army after the battle of Marston Moor in 1644 took place in the barn.

The Camp Site

The present house was built on the site of the Master's residence in 1694 to a design by the well known architect, John Etty.

During the 19th Century, George Hudson, the famed Railway King, proposed to buidl the York to Leeds railway across the site. He built a number of railway buildings, which still show the logo of the railway company. Unfortunately, he found he had jumped the gun,as he was refused permission, so no trains have ever called at Acomb Grange
